A Banker’s Guide to Healthy Wealth Series – Read More
One resolution that is also very popular on people’s lists is creating time in the day to read more on subjects you enjoy, rather than are forced to read. Previously in this series we talked about the topic of exercise; what we do not always think to include is the act of exercising the brain. The most important part of the human body, and yet we often times do not make enough time in the day to provide it with the exercise it needs. The brain provides functionality to all aspects of the body, therefore your ability to become self aware, and the ability to be aware of the different sectors in your busines
By exercising the brain we have the ability to dive into the facets of our companies and provide the utmost knowledge for our employees and believe it or not, but ourselves as well. There are many benefits to finding time to sit down for a read, whether you prefer to settle in with a nice book, use a kindle, or even browse on your laptop. That being said, today's society gives us a plethora of opportunities to gain information at the tip of a finger. What we can now carry around daily in our pockets could easily exercise the brain to help find the missing piece to a personal relationship or to solve a problem in our current companies.
Read more - Your brain requires exercise just like any other muscle in your body. Reading has been found to enhance connectivity in the brain. A decline in memory and brain function is a side effect of aging, but regular reading may help slow the process and even stave off Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. You have probably heard it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become world-class in any field.
One of the most provocative things I was ever told: “If you read 10 books on a specific subject, you will be one of the foremost experts on that subject in the world.” In fact, by just reading 3 books on a specific topic you will know more than 95% of the population. If you read 10 books on a specific topic, you will be a subject matter expert and know more than 99.999999% of the world's’ population on that topic.
That means only 7,000 people in the world know the subject as well as you. Think if you were the foremost expert in your field, how much relevance that creates for your business, and how much better you can operate your business being one of the few experts in that field. The possibilities are endless, and with the progression of inter-library loans, so too can be your subject matter.
The ability to become one of the most knowledgeable in your field solely by making time to sit down and read is something that many overlook. The benefits not only will affect your personal health, but the health of your company; this is something that affects those working around, under, and above you in your business. By becoming a well read individual, you have the ability to not only help but inspire those to exercise the most important part of the body. Increased levels of education and literature have lead to the increase in emotions, concentration, memory, and far more already touched on; why don’t we take advantage of this? Become an expert.
